IT in The D is Postponed, Our Event Next Week, Updates and More for 2/14/2013

IT in The D is being postponed until later in the year.

We’ll get into everything that went into that decision momentarily, but that’s the headline here – it’s being postponed.

Just to be clear – not canceled…just postponed.

With that in mind, let’s just go ahead and get rolling with the updates…

facebook_1432755027First, a reminder – our next casual networking event for professionals in and around the information technology industry takes place next Thursday, February 21st, at the newly opened Falling Down Beer Company.

Details can be found on our site by clicking here, on Facebook – http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD, and out on our Meetup group http://meetup.itinthed.com

So now let’s talk about IT in The D.

As noted earlier, there were a number of factors that went into us making this decision to postpone, and we didn’t do it blindly or on our own, either.  We had conversations with our sponsors, some other people whose opinions we value and trust, and we came to this decision rationally and fully informed as a whole.

IMG957833There’s a whole list of reasons why we’ve made this decision – most of which boil down to “Wow, we sure have learned a lot over the past few months”.  Venue concerns, a new major sponsor coming on board that can’t make our date work, some things that we didn’t handle or address properly…

…lots of lessons learned here.

So the good news is that as we lock this down for later in the year…regardless of how annoyed we might be that we’re not pulling this off on the date we wanted to make it happen, it’ll be what we want it to be.  A much more solid event for the attendees.  Something with a higher value to the sponsors.  A better platform for the presenters…

…like I said, lots of “lessons learned” here.

We’re targeting this to now take place in the Fall.

For those of you who bought tickets, rest easy – part of our overwhelmingly cautious approach to all of this means that we haven’t done a thing financially just yet.  We weren’t quite that dumb.  You’ll be receiving an email over the next few days that has instructions on triggering a refund or setting up as an early bird registrant for the rescheduled date.

To the sponsors…well, we’ve already talked with you.  Thank you for your support and input during these last couple of weeks.  It’s been invaluable.

To the speakers/presenters – our apologies that we’re adding this wrinkle into your schedules.  We’ll also be touching base with you shortly via email to let you know how things are being tweaked for the Fall.  We’re fairly certain it’s something you’ll very much still want to be a part of, but obviously we need to make sure your calendars will be free.

Now that we’ve freed your day up that day, don’t think we’re going to be sitting idle.  In those same conversations with our sponsors, we’re going to be shifting gears for our March event and getting a Pink Slip Party thrown together.  Candidly, it seems like this portion of the IT in The D event was what people were most looking forward to anyway, at least those who contacted us directly as well as in conversations with most of our sponsors.

We’ll have information out and available shortly on the location.

Okay, so that’s the IT in the D update.  Now let’s take a look at some other things going on, starting with a whole bunch of blog entries that are you there for you to check out.

487791_10200623169961624_2005596735_nFirst, in case you missed the memo, Bob is now one of Oakland County’s “Elite 40 under 40”.  Yes, Bob is under 40.

Yes, someone recognized him for his skills in barstool sitting and beer drinking.

All kidding aside, we’re proud of the big lug, and you can read all about it by clicking here.

Don’t Be That Guy: The Wild Pitcher is live out at https://itinthed.com/4955/dont-be-that-guy-the-wild-pitcher/, and is a wonderful tale involving Britney Spears, adult movies, and bad decisions.  I know, you’re already there reading.

How Not To Suck At LinkedIn bubbled back up over at https://itinthed.com/2684/how-not-to-suck-at-linkedin/, and I think the title is pretty self explanatory.

Don’t Be That Guy: The BS Generator is out at https://itinthed.com/1163/dont-be-that-guy-the-bullshit-generator/ …and also has a pretty clear title.

Don’t Be That Guy: The Unprepared Graduate is a good read for those still in school, or even going back to school.  You can read that over at https://itinthed.com/1784/the-unprepared-graduate/

Don’t Be That Guy: The Betta Fish is all about office dynamics, interpersonal workplace relationships, and a fish with a serious attitude.  Solid advice, and it sits over at https://itinthed.com/2633/dont-be-that-guy-the-betta-fish/

Why do we have such a negative attitude about job fairs?  Read Through the Looking Glass over at https://itinthed.com/887/through-the-looking-glass/ and find out.

There’s a ton of great discussions going on in our LinkedIn group, and a bunch of jobs posted in there as well.

In the interest of saving time to get this out to you, I’m just going to tell you that they’re there, and that you should hit http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=91763 to dive in and check things out.  We’ll get back to including more info from there and elsewhere next week.

Regards,

Bob, Dave and Jeff
